Ahhhh!

OK, now that I’ve gotten that out, I feel much better.  This week I feel like the Gingerbread Man…run, run as fast as you can.  You can’t catch me, I’m the Gingerbread Man.  I’m really runnin’ at mock speed this week…big assignments at school…Valentines madness…12 + mile runs…kids’ homework…classroom helper…psuedumonas…TOBI.  I honestly love being super busy, but there are a couple of elements that I would remove with my magic wand if I could.

So, last week Olivia was fitted for her hearing aids.  I took my personal bias and placed it on a shelf for this appointment.  I went into this appointment with the goal that I want Olivia to have the opportunity to hear just as good as everyone else.  I don’t want her to miss out on anything because of her hearing.  The only aspect of this whole hearing aid business that made me second guess my original goal is the social aspect.  I’d like to skip admitting that there will be some social ramifications for wearing a hearing aid to school.  Let’s just face it…some kids can be pretty mean.  Some parents often neglect to instill into their children the value of accepting diversity in others whether it be the color of one’s skin or a little gadget attached to one’s ear.  So, despite this, I decided I want to give Olivia the opportunity to hear the best she can regardless of what others think.  I want her to give it a try and to see what she thinks and to make the decision for herself.

Olivia, on the other hand, is super excited.  She had some squishy, pink clay squirted into her ears to make a mold of the shape of the inside.  After that, she got to pick out what colors she wanted.  I wish I could have filmed her excitement.  She was so ecstatic.  She picked out purple for the part that goes behind her ear and pink, purple, and white swirl for the molded part that goes into her ear.  Olivia’s hearing aids will be quite the fashion statement.  She can’t wait to get them and try them out.  I can’t wait to see her in them!

On to Julia…ah, Julia.  Julia had a phenomenal clinic visit this month.  She is blowing a like a champ.  Her lungs are blowing at 98% capacity which is just fantastic.  Culture results were a big disappointment.  Julia cultured pseudomonas again.  Big downer for us because she has been pseudo negative for quite some time after her clean-out.  She seems to be well, but I have noticed a difference in her energy level.  Julia hasn’t napped for months and months and now she gets pretty run down at the end of the day.  For example, it’s noon right now and she is crashed out on the floor.  Not typical of my little Julia.  Julia is back on TOBI which adds an additional hour per day of treatment time.  I feel like we’ve lost the pseudomonas battle and Julia is married to it.  The game plan now is to simply treat it with TOBI and see how it goes.  It does worry me that it’s there slowly damaging her little lungs, but I’ve accepted pseudomonas into our family as a permanent fixture.

Austin is fantastic.  He’s been busy with school, boy scouts, ice skating, and skiing.  He is great!

We are hanging in there…always looking at the bright side of things.  Spring is almost here.  We’ve had some pretty warm days hitting numbers in the 50′s.  I look forward to what adventures warmer weather brings our family.

Julia practicing with a mouthpiece. If any parents have a suggestion how to make the transition from mask to mouthpiece, please let me know. Julia is anti mouthpiece right now.

Austin and Olivia waiting to go out on the ice.

Olivia started out in Snowplow Sam 1 and was quickly moved up because she wasn't crying and rolling around on the ice like the rest of the kids.

Austin is getting a good handle on skiing. Joe looks forward to hitting some black diamonds with his favorite son...someday.

15 Years and Counting

This past Thursday marked 15 years of marriage between my wonderful husband and I.  It’s so hard to believe that 15 years ago we took the plunge.  We were just kids…literally.  Joe was 18.  We got married the day after he turned 18 in fact.  I was 19.  That seems so crazy now and I know there were many who didn’t think it would last a year.  But, 15 years later, here we are.  We knew at the time that it was a good choice, the right choice for us.  Even at 18 and 19, we just knew we wanted to spend our lives together.  I look forward to what the next 15 years holds for us.

On another completely unrelated note, there had been a recall of alcohol prep pads and other alcohol products.  This may be a concern to folks in the CF community.  I clean Julia’s Flonase spray nosel daily with an alcohol prep pad by Triad, so hopefully she doesn’t come up with a strange bacteria growing in her lungs.  Some of the pads have been found to be contaminated by the bacteria Bacillus cereus. So hopefully I wasn’t shoving some strange bacteria up Julia’s nose.  We’ll just have to wait for her next culture to see…

Welcome Ender Sven

My sister Elisa and her husband Eric have been expecting their first baby.  Friday night baby Ender made his entrance into this world.  It was a privilege to be there and take pictures for Elisa and Eric.  Elisa started off much like I did with Austin…no contractions, just broken water.  So, it took a while for drugs to kick in and things to progress to the point where Elisa was ready to push.  Eric and Elisa were so calm and relaxed.  Eric was the perfect “pushing” coach and cheerleader.  He stood by Elisa’s side counting out pushes for two straight hours.  He was a real trooper.  Elisa did everything just right.  Ender came in at 7 lbs 15 oz and 21 inches long.  He is a good little baby, I hardly heard him cry and he doesn’t seem to be a crier…yet anyway.  Mom, Dad, and baby will be going home today!

Mom, Sarah, and I sporting our "Labor Supporter" badges. Sarah insisted in being supporter #1 and I got stuck with #3. Oh well, I was just glad to be there.

It's go time! Elisa and Eric getting ready for some pushing...two hours worth!

Ender getting a bit of oxygen.

This is the only picture I have of Ender...my camera was primarily used for video and Eric's camera has all the good ones. I'll get a good one to post later!

Ender having his first meal after birth. Elisa might kill me for this one...

So exciting!  Elisa and Eric will make great parents.  There will be no shortage of love for this little guy.  Now the fun really begins!  Congratulations to Elisa and Eric!

Baby Shower Fun

Last night my sister Sarah and I put on a baby shower for our sister Elisa, who’s having a baby boy this month.  This week has been a crazy one, getting last minute things ready and yesterday, let’s just say, was busy, busy.  But oh so worth it because everything turned out great.  The food was good, the games were fun with great prizes, and Elisa got lots of things that will come in handy when the baby comes.  Here are a few pics of our shower fun!

My first booby and belly cake...so much fun!

This was my first time working with fondant and it wasn’t so bad.  I had to consult my sister-in-law Jessica on this cake, but she gave me some great tips and a simple fondant recipe and it couldn’t have gone more smoothly.  I love it!

My girls sat watching intensely as Elisa opened each and every gift.

Kamper sisters plus my kids, Austin, Olivia, and Julia...and of course our dog Jack

Austin and Olivia wore their chess shirts because they matched Elisa’s color scheme for the baby’s nursery.  We are so excited to have a new baby coming to our family.  I look forward to holding him lots and lots!

Busy, Busy

Time just seems to be getting away from me these days.  It has been a week since my last post, so I thought I’d better leave a small note at a minimum.  I have been working on a few projects this past week and one has been making no-sew tutus for Olivia and Julia.  They are super easy, simply made by tying tulle strips on a piece of ribbon.  If you want to learn how to make one, just go to youtube.com and type in a search for no-sew tutus and you will get a variety of tutorials that can show you just how they’re made.

Very poofy!

Julia has been testing my patience lately with her artwork.  She thinks it’s quite funny to display it all over the house…on my furniture, my carpet, my drapes, just about anywhere where she knows I don’t like.  I have decided to go to Lakeshore and get her some large paper to work her large motor skills out via marker.  I’m so tired of scrubbing marker out of fabric.  I even put all the markers up high, but she always seems to find one and put it to good use.  If anyone has a quick fix solution to her marker madness, please do share!  It’s driving me crazy!

Lovely! I think one actually looks like a ghost.

On a side note, Joe is getting his car repaired and has been given a rental car.  The funny thing about all this is the rental car he was given. Anyone want to take a wild guess?

Ha, ha…he’s driving a yellow beetle.  So, make sure when you see him in it to point and laugh!  I guess the only thing that would make it a bit worse is if it were pink.  He was supposed to get a mid-sized car…at least the kids like it.  It makes a good teenage girl’s car.  Ha, ha!
